Common questions
- What is an F-1 student visa?
- The F-1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa for international students enrolled in a full-time academic or English-language program at a U.S. school certified by SEVP. It allows you to study in the United States and, in many cases, work through CPT or OPT during or after your program.
- Can I work while on an F-1 visa?
- F-1 students may work on campus part-time during the school year and full-time during breaks. Off-campus work generally requires Curricular Practical Training (CPT) before graduation or Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation, especially for STEM degree holders who may qualify for an extension.
- How do I change status to F-1 from another visa?
- If you are already in the U.S. in another lawful status, you may apply to USCIS for a change of status to F-1. Timing is important because there can be gaps between statuses. We coordinate with your school’s DSO and prepare the I-539 petition.
- What documents do I need for the F-1 visa interview?
- You will typically need a valid passport, Form I-20 from your U.S. school, SEVIS fee receipt (Form I-901), DS-160 confirmation, proof of ties to your home country, and financial evidence showing you can pay tuition and living expenses without unauthorized work.
- Can my spouse or children come with me?
- Yes. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 may apply for F-2 dependent visas. F-2 dependents may study part-time in certain circumstances, but they are not authorized to work in the United States.
